The Black Health Equity Lab was founded in 2022 by Dr. Notisha Massaquoi. It is a multidisciplinary social science lab which conducts rigorous community-based health research to advance policy, practice and equitable health service delivery. The BHEL produces research that is directed by and in collaboration with Black communities and explores the intersections of the social determinants of health and anti-Black racism. Research has clearly shown that Black community members across the country experience disproportionate poor health outcomes as demonstrated by almost any measure of health and wellbeing. The goal of our research is to increase our ability to radically shift how we can improve the survival and wellbeing of Black people in Canada.
